Daycare Tips and Advice

When you are a single parent there are many challenges you will face. The biggest challenge for any single dad is finding somebody to watch your child/children while you are working. The traditional day care can be ridiculously expensive in most places and the philosophy of the day care can be very different at everyone. Knowing these two factors can be very discouraging and make you stress out about how you are going to be able to figure out daycare for your kids. Please do not fret because there are other options available to you.

One of the best ways to find day care that is affordable is to seek out other single fathers in your area. You are not the only single parent around and most likely you are not the first to need day care. Some of the places you can seek out other single parents are at the bulletin boards at local establishments, the grocery store, or a local newspaper. There also might be a co-op for babysitting where other single dads will trade day care responsibilities. These are sometimes hard to find but, if there is not one available to start, why don’t you start one yourself? Another thing you can do is try and find another single parent that works on a different schedule than you and see if you can swap times on watching the kids.

If you happen to live near a college you could check the campus to see if there is anyone interested in doing some daycare work for you. Grad and undergrad students are always looking for a place to live and if you have a spare room at your home you could offer that up as payment for the student for watching your child. This scenario of course will take some due diligence on your part to make sure you screen them properly because they will be caring for your child and living in your home. If you don’t feel like this could work for you or if you don’t have enough room in your home you could offer them some financial help as a fair wage for watching your child/children. The psychology or education department is the best place to begin your search at the local campus.

There are many childcare grants available to single parents. Please make sure that you apply for everyone that you qualify for. If you are still searching for some daycare information and tips please check with the Child Care and Development Fund. This fund can provide low-income financial help. The National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies (NACCRRA) is another source that you can look at to get some financial assistance. Finally, don’t forget to use the internet and use the search term with quotes “daycare grants for single dads” and “daycare grants for single moms” and “daycare grants for single parents”. You can use any search engine you feel the most comfortable with. For example Google or Bing.

In closing, no matter which direction you choose to follow always make sure that you are comfortable with anyone who is going to be around your kids…At the end of the day that is always the most important thing of all.
